Super 8 Movie Review
Super 8 is like watching the movies you watched when you were a kid. The film brings back a lot of memories, experiences and emotions. In a way, it reaches to the inner child within us.
Super 8 was written and directed by JJ Abrams. The film is like a unique mix of creativity and homage to Steven Spielberg. The film has a lot of intriguing factors that help make it into a great film.
Super 8 has a cast of newbies and unknowns. This is a factor that makes the film even more watchable. The new guys, or should I say kids, bring a new feel of realism to the film. They’re fun, stubborn and funny at the same time. All the adult actors only compliment the young ones. Abrams really know how to combine different types of actors and mould them into one radiating performance.
The film also has great cinematography. Abrams has that unique style of lights and shadows while he moves the camera. The locations fit perfectly to the story. Abrams and his cinematographer really did a good job of focusing key scenes with great locations and camera movements and angling.
Visual and special effects are also a key factor to the film. Like his previous films, Abrams really put time to detail. From floating cars, explosion, the alien and even a small cube, the special effects were done well.
The theme for the film is something out of a Spielberg film. It blends well with the era and the emotion of the character. It carries the story as well. May it be a sweet scene or a great fight, its notes and sound bring the film together.
Like classic Spielberg film, the film has a simple story line but it’s the way the story is told that make it a good watch. The film has a lot of emotions. It focuses on that and not on the fights and the scare. The story is carried on the characters and their personal struggles. The kids are the glue that holds the film intact. Each crush, each fear and each tear reflects upon the entire film.
Super 8 may have an alien but it is not about the alien. It is more on the kids and their relationship with their families. It is about their relationship to one another and the bond the hold them together. The film really is homage to Spielberg given that his films are like that. Just like War of the Worlds or Close Encounters of A Third Kind.
Super 8 is a great family film. It made me feel like a kid watching a film for the first time on the big screen. It reaches to our inner child and our inner geek. It brings back the excitement with UFOs. All that mystery, cover ups and the jokes on the side. For those who loved E.T., watch Super 8 and be amazed again.
Super 8 is a film of emotion, friendship, family and letting go. A true family film and a must see. I give it 9 out of 10.
