Green Lantern Movie Review
I’m a fan of the Green Lantern comic book series. I’m even a fan of the animated films. But the live action adaptation falls short to be as good as the preceding works.
Green Lantern is a film full of wonder and stunning visuals. But it lacks creativity and imagination. The film has a story line that is simple yet had the capability to be more. Sad to say, it didn’t do that. Green Lantern’s flame started to fizzle when the film reached its first 30 minutes. The films had a lot of great factors but were not used properly. It also has a great cast but they didn’t play out well too.
Cinematography for the film was well made. Camera angling and movement allowed the audience to feel like flying, especially in 3D. Blending with colors, lights and shade were in perfect balance, given that most of the colors are green or in a shade of green.
The film is Green Lantern so expect a lot of great visual effects. The filmmakers and crew did a massive job with the effects. They even added more cash to improve the effects. But the effects for the film had its ups and downs. There were times that the effects would appear too cartoonish, like Hal’s mask. But there are times it was great. Check out the opening scenes as well as most of the fight scenes. but like I said earlier, the film lacked creativity and imagination.
If you are a Green Lantern, you must have a very creative mind. But it appears the filmmakers weren’t creative enough. All of Hal’s projections were lame. They can be thought up by a child. They should have at least added some complicated projections.
Another thing that made the film fizzle is the actors. They are a great cast of great actors but they lack chemistry. Ryan Reynolds does well on his own but when put together in a scene, he sort of disappears. Ryan’s portrayal of Hal was not free of flaws. He starts out as a tough guy with tough exteriors but then he shows us his vulnerable side. But at the end of the film, he fails to really show how he overcame his fears. As an audience, we can’t see that in the performance. He just felt weak at first then suddenly he is strong. Also, we can’t see a romantic chemistry between him and Blake Lively. Blake Lively’s performance in the film is not her best. We just see her doing soft emotions that could have been more. Mark Strong and Peter Sarsgaard did a great job in the portrayal of their characters. We get to see a real villain and a villain in the making. They show the viewers that there is more to them than just scary looks.
The score of the film was good enough to carry the movie. Its blend of electric guitars and classic strings brought enough emotion to the Green Lantern world.
The film’s story is the main thing that holds the film. It is an origin story of Hal Jordan becoming the first human Green Lantern but the film found a difficulty cultivating that part. It is more of the Corps and some childhood love triangle which wasn’t explained very well.
The film has great humor. It is one thing that keeps you watching on. But it still not enough to vanquish the light of lameness. Green Lantern is a fun adaptation but it fails to live up to expectation. The animated films have an edge over the film. But of course, the film earns more.
Green Lantern is a fairly good ride. Some will like it; fans of the comic books will be torn in liking or hating it; and other s will just don’t know how to feel about it. The film has a story worth telling but the storytellers failed to tell it well. I give it 6.5 out of 10.
