Scream 4 Movie Review
When Scream first came out, it was considered as one of the newest and original take on slasher films. Now, after years since Scream 3, Scream 4 unleashes a new set of thrill to a new generation.
But the new thrills are not good enough to satisfy both old and new. Scream 4 has lost quite its ingredients that make one of the best slasher films of all time. This time around it has become sort of a cliché and a movie joke. There are still mysteries but you will get tired of guessing who it will be this time around. Who gets killed or who kills who. The story is no longer fun.
The one thing good to see in the film is the return of the original cast. At least their characters never changed. But the addition of the new cast members sort of dragged this film down. From the original cast, we get a real feel of fear and bewilderment. They really show that they are seriously looking for the killer at the same time weary of their friends. The new cast take it relaxed. They appear to have known who the killer is. They are not showing signs of fear. They just run around because they are being chased but there is no solid emotional anguish.
The film also has a lot of unnecessary scenes and dialogues. These lines seem to be part of the film’s humour but at times fail to deliver. The film also has some scenes that were supposed to scare or frighten the viewers but they became duds. Scream 4 had a lot to work with but they stuck with the mediocre stuff.
The only good thing I liked in the film was the beginning and the end part where the villain comes out. Scream has this tradition of killing a famous actor at the beginning of the film. And I liked that they opened with a beginning of a film within a film within a film. Only Scream can make that idea work.
Scream 4 still has some chills and thrills but Ghostface has lost his mojo. The iconic wardrobe does nothing new to scare us or feel threatened by him when he’s in the room. Scream 4 may work for some and at times may not. Still, this is a new take at the franchise and it still needs more work.
Scream is a slasher flick with only low velocity blood spatter and delivers only flesh wounds. This one can’t live up to the original. I give it 5 out of 10.
